Wisdom, the Breath of God

At the center of the book, Solomon tells how he received Wisdom, and describes her nature in a page of unequalled height. Wisdom is not a human quality, she comes from God: she is a breath of his power, an emanation of his glory, the reflection of eternal light, the spotless mirror of his working, the image of his goodness. She penetrates all things, renews all things, and makes those she dwells in friends of God. The Church has always read these lines of the Son, the Word who is the radiance of the Father’s glory, and applies them to the Virgin Mary, in whom nothing defiled found entry.

Solomon asks for Wisdom

Solomon did not win Wisdom by his own strength, he received her by asking: “I prayed, and understanding was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.” Wisdom 7:7 She is a gift, sought and granted, never a spoil. So he preferred her to scepter and throne, to riches, health, and beauty, for all these goods come with her and nothing equals her. His long prayer asks God to send her from beside his throne, for without her man cannot know what God wills: “who could have known your will, if you had not given Wisdom and sent your Holy Spirit from on high?” Wisdom 9:17 True wisdom, then, is not an achievement of the human mind, but a gift that comes down from God and makes man capable of God.

A breath of the power of God

To say what Wisdom is, the author borrows the highest language of the whole Bible. She is swifter than all: “Wisdom is more mobile than any motion; in her purity she passes through and penetrates all things.” Wisdom 7:24 And above all, she comes from God himself, from his substance and his glory: “She is a breath of the power of God, a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty.” Wisdom 7:25 These words set her apart from every creature: she does not stand outside God like a thing that is made, she proceeds from within his glory, as breath proceeds from the one who breathes. And because she comes from God, she is of a purity nothing can reach: no defilement steals into her.

The reflection of eternal light

Then the author heaps up images of light, each more transparent than the last: “She is the reflection of eternal light, the spotless mirror of the working of God, and the image of his goodness.” Wisdom 7:26 Reflection of light: she shows God as a ray shows the sun. Spotless mirror: she renders the working of God perfectly, without distorting it. Image of his goodness: she bears in herself the very goodness of the Creator. Though she is but one, she can do all things, and her work is to make the world new: “passing into holy souls, she makes them friends of God and prophets.” Wisdom 7:27 She governs the universe with a gentle strength: “She reaches from one end of the world to the other with her strength, and orders all things with gentleness.” Wisdom 8:1

Wisdom and Christ

The Church reads this page of the Son of God. The very words return in the New Testament to say who Christ is: “This Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact imprint of his being.” Hebrews 1:3 The reflection and the image of which Wisdom speaks, the Son is them in fullness. This confirms the reading, unfolded in connection with the great poem of Proverbs, that eternal Wisdom is the Word, the Son through whom all was made. What the Wisdom of Solomon adds is this language of light and purity that the Gospel will apply to Christ, the true light that enlightens every man John 1:9. From this comes too the Marian reading: since Wisdom is she into whom nothing defiled steals, the liturgy reads this book of the Virgin Mary, the all-pure, in whom Wisdom made her dwelling, the seat of Wisdom. Finally, Wisdom is received through the gift of the Spirit: what the Old Testament called the Wisdom sent from beside God, the New names the Holy Spirit poured into hearts, who makes us friends of God and sons.
