Wisdom, Guide of History

In its last part, the book rereads the whole history of salvation as the work of Wisdom, who watched over the righteous from Adam to the Exodus. She saved the first man, carried Noah through the flood, kept Abraham faithful, snatched Lot from the fire, led Jacob and Joseph, and brought the people out of Egypt by the hand of Moses. In this reading, the same power that punishes the wicked saves the righteous, and God, who could lay his enemies low with a breath, orders all things with measure and gentleness, for he loves all that exists.

Wisdom watches over the righteous

The author unrolls a gallery of the protected righteous, and at each stage it is Wisdom he shows at work. She first guarded the first man: “It was Wisdom who protected the first-formed father of the world.” Wisdom 10:1 She saved Noah from the flood by a simple piece of wood, the ark that carries the righteous through the waters of judgment, that saving wood foreshadowing from afar the wood of the Cross. She kept Abraham blameless on the day of testing, snatched Lot from the fire of Sodom, and led Jacob fleeing his brother’s anger: “she showed him the kingdom of God and gave him knowledge of holy things.” Wisdom 10:10 Nor did she abandon Joseph at the bottom of the pit, but went down with him into his prison and raised him to power. Each time, Wisdom is the providence of God at work, the hidden hand that leads the righteous through trial, without forcing his freedom yet never letting him go. The whole history of the origins and the patriarchs is thus reread as the long thread of one same faithfulness.

Wisdom leads the Exodus

The center of this history is the coming out of Egypt. Wisdom led the people out of slavery by the hand of Moses, guided them by a pillar of fire through the night and the sea. The author then rereads the plagues and the blessings according to a principle of his own: the same elements that strike Egypt become graces for Israel. The water that turns to blood for the Egyptians becomes water sprung from the rock for the thirsty people; the darkness that blinds Egypt becomes light that guides Israel. When the serpents bite the people in the desert, God does not remove the scourge, but gives a sign to look upon and be saved, and the author says at once whence the salvation comes: “whoever turned toward that sign was saved, not by what he looked upon, but by you, the Savior of all.” Wisdom 16:7 That bronze serpent lifted on a piece of wood, Christ will apply to himself: “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up.” John 3:14 And instead of the beasts that overwhelm the oppressor, God gives the manna, the bread come from heaven: “from heaven you gave them without toil a bread ready to eat, offering every taste and suited to every palate.” Wisdom 16:20 This bread that lends itself to every desire announces from afar the true Bread of heaven. The same creation serves for judgment or for mercy, according to the heart of the one who receives it: it is not the world that changes, it is man’s relation to God.

All ordered by measure, number, and weight

From this rereading, the author draws the summit of his theology. God could destroy his enemies with a single breath, but he governs otherwise: “you have ordered all things by measure, number, and weight.” Wisdom 11:20 The world is not a chaos, but an order weighed by a wise God; this verse will become one of the supports of all Christian thought on creation and providence. And the reason for this patience of God is his love: “you love all that exists, and loathe nothing you have made.” Wisdom 11:24 The power of God is at the service of his mercy; he spares because he loves, and nothing exists that he does not hold in being by love. It is one of the tenderest verses of the Old Testament, and it prepares the Gospel of the God who is love.
