Wisdom for Daily Life

The greater part of the book is made of short sayings on everyday life. The wisdom of Proverbs does not float in the heights: it comes down into the mouth, the work, the money, the friendship, the anger. It is there that it is proved, for a man is known by his way of speaking, of laboring, and of mastering himself.

The Tongue, Work, Money

The proverbs weigh the small acts that make a life. First the tongue, whose power is immense: a word can heal or destroy, lift up or kill. "Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit." Proverbs 18:21 The book returns to it again and again: a soft answer calms fury, a hard word stirs it up; the gossip separates friends, while a word spoken in season is like apples of gold. The wise man weighs his words, the fool pours them out. Then comes work: the book sends the sluggard to watch the ant, who lays up in summer without being commanded, and mocks the one who says "a little more sleep" while the bramble overruns his field, for laziness brings poverty as surely as an armed prowler. And money: it prefers the little held with justice to great gains wrung by wrong, recalls that the borrower is the slave of his lender, and praises the hand open to the poor, for whoever gives to the needy lends to the Lord, who will repay his kindness. In trade, it demands honesty even in small things: a false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight has his favor, for wisdom does not separate piety from probity. And it knows what makes the worth of a home: better a dry morsel of bread in peace than a house full of feasting with strife, for no riches buy back a life without harmony.

The Bonds: Upbringing, Friendship, Anger

Wisdom also shapes our bonds. It teaches to raise a child with loving firmness, to train him from an early age in the way he should go, so that he will not turn from it when he is old, for the correction that comes from love is not harshness but care. It far prefers the faithful friend to the crowd of fair-weather companions, and knows that iron sharpens iron, as one friend sharpens another by frankness, so much so that the wounds of a friend are better than the kisses of an enemy. "A friend loves at all times, and in trouble he proves to be a brother." Proverbs 17:17 And it sets self-mastery above conquest: to rule one’s temper is a greater victory than to take a city. "Better a patient man than a warrior, and one who rules his temper than one who takes a city." Proverbs 16:32 In each of these things, the same wisdom is at work: the fear of the Lord come down into the ordinary, ordering speech, labor, friendship, and anger.

A Holiness of the Ordinary

These sayings might seem mere prudence, but they are more: they are the fear of the Lord made concrete, the wisdom of God taught for the smallest choices. To hold one’s tongue, to work honestly, to give to the poor, to keep faith with a friend, to master one’s anger, is the daily shape of a life ordered to God, there where fidelity is at stake with no witness. The Gospel will take up these demands and deepen them, when Christ makes the mastery of the heart, and not only of the act, the measure of the truly wise: it will no longer be enough to hold back one’s hand, but to purify the desire from which the deed comes, nor to speak well, but to guard the heart from which the word rises. The practical wisdom of Proverbs thus prepares the holiness of the ordinary that the Gospel asks of all, that faithfulness in small things where, without splendor, the love of God and neighbor is at stake.
