The Senses of the Song

A love song where God is never named, and yet one of the most meditated books of the whole Bible: the Song calls for several levels of reading, which tradition has patiently unfolded. It is first, in the literal sense, the song of human love. But Israel read in it the love of God for his people, Christians the love of Christ for his Church, the mystics the union of the soul with God, and Marian piety the figure of Mary, the all-beautiful. These readings do not contradict one another: they rise one from another, for all true love comes from the same hearth.

The literal sense: the song of human love

The first sense of the Song is also the simplest: it is a poem of human love, beautiful and good in itself. The Church never dissolves this literal sense into allegory, as if the song were ashamed of what it says; on the contrary, she holds it to be the foundation of all the others. If the Song can figure the love of God, it is precisely because it first sings, with truth, the love of two beings. Allegory does not deny the letter, it rests upon it: it is because human love is really strong, beautiful, and faithful that it can become the image of a greater love.

The love of God for his people

Long before the Christians, Israel read the Song as the song of the covenant. The prophets had already spoken of God’s love for his people under the image of marriage: God is the husband, Israel the bride, by turns faithful and unfaithful, wooed in the desert and called back by tenderness. Hosea, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel sang this wounded and patient love. Read in this light, the Song becomes the song of the covenant regained: the search in the night is Israel seeking her God in exile; the reunion is the return of favor. This is why Israel proclaims it at Passover, in memory of the coming out of Egypt, as the nuptial song of the God who has espoused his people.

Christ and the Church

Christians received this reading and fulfilled it in Christ. For what the Old Testament announced, Saint Paul names: the union of man and woman is the sign of a greater mystery. Citing the account of creation, he concludes: “the two will become one. This mystery is great: I say it with Christ and the Church in mind.” Ephesians 5:31-32 Christ is the Bridegroom who loved the Church and gave himself for her; the Church is the Bride whom he purifies and to whom he gives himself. Thenceforth, the Song becomes their love song: the voice of the beloved is that of Christ who calls, the voice of the bride that of the Church who seeks, desires, and gives herself. Human love, without ceasing to be itself, is revealed as the mirror of the love that unites Christ to his people.

The union of the soul with God

From the whole Church, the reading descends to each soul. The great spiritual masters, from Origen to Saint Bernard, down to Saint John of the Cross, read the Song as the song of the union of the faithful soul with God. The search for the beloved in the night becomes the image of the times of dryness when God hides himself to purify love; the reunion, the joy of presence regained; the mutual belonging, the summit of the spiritual life, where the soul can say to God: I am yours, and hear him answer: you are mine. This union is called mystical marriage, not that it abolishes the distance between the creature and the Creator, but because it is the height of love, a reciprocal and total gift. The Song has thus become the prayer book of the contemplatives, the song where the soul learns to desire God as one desires the beloved.

Mary, all beautiful

Finally, tradition has read the Song of the Virgin Mary, in whom the Bride finds her purest face. The word of the beloved, “You are all beautiful, my love, and there is no flaw in you” Song of Songs 4:7, the Church applies to Mary, the all-beautiful, preserved from every stain from her conception. The enclosed garden and the sealed fountain, images of the beauty reserved for the beloved alone, are read of her virginity, wholly given to God. Mary is the Bride fulfilled, the one in whom humanity at last fully answers the love of God, and the Mother of the Bridegroom. In her, the four readings meet: the purest human love, the perfect covenant, the Church in her most beautiful figure, and the soul united without reserve to her Lord.
