The Psalms of Praise and Thanksgiving

The first great movement of the Psalter is praise. A part of the psalms asks for nothing: they bless God for himself, for his greatness in creation and his goodness toward his people. Others, very close, give thanks for a help received. To praise and to thank is to acknowledge that all comes from God and to return it to him: the summit of prayer, where man comes out of himself to turn toward one greater than he.

The Hymns of Praise

The hymns of praise often follow a single form: a call to praise, then the motive, "for…", which says why God is worthy of praise. They call the whole being, and all creation, to bless God, and overflow with gratitude without asking for anything. "Bless the Lord, O my soul; let all that is within me bless his holy name!" Psalms 103:1 They marvel before the immensity of the heavens, and, within that immensity, before the dignity God gives to man, so small and yet loved. "what is man, that you should think of him, the son of man, that you should care for him?" Psalms 8:5 Others sing the whole cosmos as a temple of praise, the sun that comes out like a bridegroom, the waters, the beasts, and the stars, up to the final psalms where everything that breathes, with every harp and every trumpet, is summoned to praise God. The hymn does not ask, it admires: it is the prayer of a soul that has stopped bargaining and simply lifts its eyes toward the greatness and goodness of its Creator.

The Psalms of Thanksgiving

Very close to the hymn, the psalm of thanksgiving blesses God for a specific help: a healing, a victory over enemies, death turned aside, a fault forgiven. The one praying tells what God has done for him, calls others to share his joy, and often fulfills in the assembly a vow made in distress, by offering a sacrifice of thanks. "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his faithful love endures forever!" Psalms 118:1 This refrain, "his faithful love endures forever," beats through a whole psalm where it returns at every verse like a pulse, and it says the heart of all Israel’s thanksgiving: it is the hesed, God’s covenant love, his faithful tenderness that never fails, neither in creation, nor in the exodus from Egypt, nor in forgiveness. The psalm of thanksgiving thus turns a private deliverance into public praise, so that the salvation of one becomes the song of the whole assembly, and his joy widens to the dimensions of the people. Israel also gave thanks with one voice for the great common blessings: a long psalm, called the great Hallel, tells over the creation and then the exodus from Egypt, taking up at every verse the same refrain, "for his love endures forever," like a litany of God’s faithfulness through the whole of history. And one of the most beautiful praises of creation follows, day by day, the very order of Genesis, singing the light, the waters, the beasts, and man, to refer back to the Creator the beauty of all that is.

Praise, the End of All Prayer

Praise is the point toward which the whole Psalter tends: it opens on the wisdom of the two ways and ends on five psalms of pure praise. Even the darkest laments usually turn, before their end, toward a note of trust and praise, as if the soul could not remain in its cry. A group of psalms of praise, the Hallel, was sung at the great feasts, and it is this that Jesus sang with his disciples at the end of the Last Supper, before going out to the Mount of Olives: Christ went to his Passion with praise on his lips. For the Church, this movement is a school: she learns from the psalms that the last word belongs not to need but to praise, and that to bless God is already to be delivered, because it is already to be turned toward him. The Eucharist itself, whose name means "thanksgiving," is the supreme act of this praise the psalms had learned to sing: in it, the Church returns to the Father, through Christ, the gratitude of which the Psalter kept the voice.
