The Psalms of Ascents and Wisdom

Two families of psalms trace a road. The psalms of ascents were sung by pilgrims going up to Jerusalem for the feasts; the wisdom psalms teach the way of the just, bound to the Law of God. The first tell the joy of going up to the house of God, the others the joy of living by his word. Together, they make the Psalter not only a prayer, but a school of life before God.

The Psalms of Ascents

A group of fifteen short psalms bears the title "song of ascents": they were sung while climbing the road to Jerusalem, built on its heights, for the three great feasts, and Jewish tradition also links them to the fifteen steps of the Temple. They tell first the joy of setting out toward the sanctuary. "What joy when they said to me: Let us go to the house of the Lord!" Psalms 122:1 They lift the eyes from the road toward the God who guards the traveler. "My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth." Psalms 121:2 The others sing in turn the peace of Jerusalem, the sweetness of brothers dwelling together, the joy of those who return from exile as from a dream, the uselessness of building unless the Lord builds, the soul stilled like a weaned child, and the cry from the depths of one who waits for the Lord more than a watchman waits for the dawn. These short poems, made for walking, tell a whole road of faith; and the ascent toward the earthly city becomes, for the Church, the image of the whole of life as a pilgrimage toward the Jerusalem above, where God awaits his own.

The Wisdom Psalms

The wisdom psalms teach rather than pray: they set before the reader the two ways, that of the just and that of the wicked, and their opposite ends. The Psalter opens deliberately on such a psalm, like a porch: happy the one who does not follow the counsel of the wicked, but who finds his joy in the Law of God. "but who finds his joy in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night." Psalms 1:2 Such a man is like a tree planted by streams of water, which gives its fruit in season, while the wicked is like the chaff the wind drives away. But other wisdom psalms face the hard question the two ways raise: why do the wicked prosper, and the just suffer? One of them admits that the one praying had almost slipped on seeing the happiness of the ungodly, until the day when, entering the sanctuary of God, he understood their end. They answer, as Job will, by looking beyond this life, toward the final justice of God, who puts each thing back in its place and does not leave the just without reward.

The Law, Joy and Light

The longest of all the psalms, and the summit of this wisdom, is one immense song in praise of the Law of God: a hundred and seventy-six verses in twenty-two stanzas, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet, each stanza taking up its letter in every one of its verses. It sings the Law under eight different names, precept, word, decree, commandment, and presents it not as a burden, but as a joy, a freedom, and a light for the road. "Your word is a lamp for my steps, a light on my path." Psalms 119:105 Here the Law is loved, sweeter than honey, and not only observed: the word of God has become the joy of the heart, the lamp of a whole life. This love of the word prepares the Gospel, where the Word is no longer only a text to meditate, but a Person to follow, the light of the world who says, "I am the way." The wisdom of the psalms thus opens onto Christ, in whom the Law finds its fullness, and the pilgrim who went up toward Jerusalem discovers that the true end of the road is a person, and not a place.
