The Ministry of the New Covenant

At the heart of the second letter, Paul unfolds the greatness of the ministry entrusted to him: to serve no longer the Law engraved on stone, but the new covenant of the Spirit. This immense glory he nonetheless carries in a fragile and threatened life, and he orders it wholly to one work, to reconcile men with God. What might seem a defense of himself thus becomes the finest portrait of what an envoy of Christ is.

The Letter and the Spirit

Paul knows himself the minister of a new covenant, which does not merely prescribe the good from without, but gives within the strength to accomplish it. “who has made us capable of being ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” 2 Corinthians 3:6 The letter kills, not because it is evil, but because it commands without giving the strength to obey; the Spirit gives life, because he changes the heart. The Law of Moses was already glorious, so much so that the face of Moses shone as he came down from Sinai, but he had to cover it with a veil, and this veil is the image of a glory still hidden. In Christ, the veil falls, and the believer contemplates with unveiled face the glory of the Lord, which transforms him little by little into his image. “we are being transformed into that same image, from glory to glory, by the Lord, who is Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18

A Treasure in Earthen Vessels

This glory Paul carries in weakness, and in it he sees a design of God: that the power may appear as coming from him, and not from the man who serves it. “But this treasure we carry in earthen vessels, so that this extraordinary power may be seen to be God’s and not ours.” 2 Corinthians 4:7 The earthen vessel is fragile and of no value; the treasure it holds shines out only the more for it. So Paul describes his life as an apostle as a string of trials from which he always comes out standing, not by his own strength, but by the one that dwells in him. “Pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 He carries in his body the death of Jesus so that his life may be made manifest in it, and this trial itself works toward his salvation, for he measures it against what is coming. “our momentary affliction, so slight, is preparing for us, beyond all measure, an eternal weight of glory.” 2 Corinthians 4:17

The Ministry of Reconciliation

All this greatness places itself at the service of one work, and what drives Paul is neither ambition nor duty, but the love of Christ who died for all. “For the love of Christ compels us, once we are convinced that one has died for all, and that therefore all have died.” 2 Corinthians 5:14 For in Christ, God reconciles the world to himself. Whoever is united to him enters a world made new, where sin is no longer counted. “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: the old world has gone, a new world has already been born.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 This reconciliation comes from God alone, who took the initiative to renew the bond with rebellious men, not counting their trespasses against them. “it was God who, in Christ, was reconciling the world to himself, not counting people’s trespasses against them.” 2 Corinthians 5:19 And he entrusts this word to his envoys, who speak in the name of Christ to press men to return: this is the whole ministry of Paul. “So we are ambassadors of Christ, and through us it is God himself who makes his appeal: in the name of Christ, we beg you, be reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:20 The foundation of all this exchange holds in a word of inexhaustible depth: Christ took our sin upon himself to give us in return his own righteousness. “The one who had not known sin, God made to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 This is why the hour of salvation is neither yesterday nor tomorrow, but today, without delay. “Now is the favorable time; now is the day of salvation.” 2 Corinthians 6:2
