The Law and Christ

One question remains, which commands all: what becomes of the Law for the Christian? Christ said it himself, he did not come to abolish it, but to fulfil it. To understand his work is to grasp why God had given the Law, how Christ brings it to its term, what in it abides or passes away, and what new law he inaugurates in the heart of man.

Why God Gave the Law

The Law was good, but it had a precise role and a limit. It showed the good to be done, and thereby revealed the evil committed, awakening in man the consciousness of his sin without giving him the strength to overcome it. “the Law does nothing more than give the knowledge of sin.” Romans 3:20 Far from being the sickness, it was the mirror that makes the wound seen; it is by forbidding covetousness that it made known what covetousness was. “I would not have known covetousness if the Law had not said: You shall not covet.” Romans 7:7 It also had a duration: added at a given time, it watched over the people as a guardian watches over the child, until the coming of the one God had promised. “It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made.” Galatians 3:19 The Law therefore called for something greater than itself, and pointed to it beforehand.

Christ Fulfils the Law

Christ fulfils the Law in three ways. He keeps it perfectly, he who never sinned, offering to God the whole obedience that man had refused him since Adam. He reveals its deepest sense, leading each commandment from the act to the heart, as in the Sermon on the Mount, where he asks not only not to kill, but not to hate, not only not to betray, but to keep the gaze pure. And he gathers all the substance of the Law into love, where it finds its fullness. “Love does no wrong to the neighbor: love is therefore the full fulfillment of the Law.” Romans 13:10 In him, that toward which the whole Law tended is at last given. “the end of the Law is Christ, so that everyone who believes may be justified.” Romans 10:4 To fulfil does not mean to abolish, but to bring to its perfection what was still only sketched.

What Abides and What Passes Away

The distinction of the three kinds of precepts then lights up what becomes of each. The moral law, the Decalogue, abides entire, for the good it commands does not change; Christ confirms and deepens it, taking nothing from it, and the Christian remains bound to it. The ceremonial law, the ancient worship, finds its term in Christ: the true Temple, the one priest, the one sacrifice having come, the figures have done their work and give way to the reality they announced; to observe them still as before would be to prefer the shadow to the body. The judicial law, made to govern Israel as a nation, ceases with that nation; but the spirit of justice that animated it, the care for the poor, the stranger, the weak, abides and extends to all peoples. Thus nothing of the Law is lost: what was to last lasts, what was only a figure is fulfilled, and what served one particular people now nourishes the conscience of all.

The New Law, the Grace of the Spirit

The greatest change is not in the text of the Law, but in the heart of man. What the Law commanded from without without being able to give it, Christ makes possible from within, by pouring out his Spirit. “what was impossible for the Law, powerless because of the flesh, God has done: sending his own Son.” Romans 8:3 A new law is born, which is no longer first a text, but an inner strength. “the law of the Spirit who gives life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:2 Thus is fulfilled the promise of the prophets, a law written no longer on stone, but in hearts. “I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk according to my laws.” Ezekiel 36:26-27 This new law is the grace of the Holy Spirit, which makes one love what the Law asked, and makes light the yoke that once weighed. “my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Matthew 11:29-30 The Law led to Christ as the guardian leads the child to the master; Christ, in turn, gives the power to fulfil the Law, not through fear, but through love.
