The Fear of the Lord, Source of Wisdom

For Ben Sira, all wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord. He says it in a series of images that open his book: the fear of the Lord is the beginning, the fullness, the crown, and the root of wisdom. This fear is not the dread of a slave, but the loving reverence that puts God first. It is tested: whoever would serve God must prepare for trial, like gold in the fire. And Ben Sira never leaves the sinner without hope: he calls him to convert without delay, sure of the great mercy of God.

The beginning, the fullness, the crown

The book opens by declaring that all wisdom comes from the Lord, and it draws at once the refrain that structures the first chapters. The fear of the Lord is its beginning: “The beginning of wisdom is to fear the Lord.” Sirach 1:14 It is its fullness: “The fullness of wisdom is to fear the Lord.” Sirach 1:16 It is its crown: “The crown of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.” Sirach 1:18 It is, finally, its root: “The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord, and her branches are long life.” Sirach 1:20 These four images say one thing under four angles: the fear of the Lord accompanies wisdom from its first stirring to its full flowering. This fear has nothing of the terror of a slave before a master: it is the respect of a son who honors his father, the reverence that refuses to offend the One it loves. The same thread runs through all the wisdom of Israel, which already repeated that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; Ben Sira makes it the very frame of his book.

A wisdom tested in the fire

Ben Sira does not deceive his reader: to serve God does not spare from suffering. On the contrary, whoever takes it up must be ready for it. “My son, if you come forward to serve the Lord, prepare your soul for testing.” Sirach 2:1 He gives the image of the precious metal passed through the crucible: as gold is purified in the furnace, the faithful are formed and refined in trial. “for gold is tested in the fire, and those pleasing to God in the furnace of humiliation.” Sirach 2:5 Trial, then, is not the sign of a desertion by God, but the way by which he forms and purifies those he loves. Ben Sira asks for steadfastness: to stand firm, not to be shaken in the day of misfortune, to cling to God and not leave him. A generation later, when the Maccabean persecution breaks out, men and women will live this word to the point of martyrdom, choosing to die rather than betray the Law.

Trust in God

Against discouragement, Ben Sira sets trust. “Trust in him, and he will help you.” Sirach 2:6 Those who fear the Lord will not be disappointed; their heart is ready to hope, for they know to whom they entrust themselves. And when one must choose between relying on men or on God, the wise man does not hesitate: better to fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy matches his greatness. “Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, not into the hands of men, for his greatness equals his mercy.” Sirach 2:18 This trust bears fruits that Ben Sira lists with restraint: peace, health of soul, joy, and length of days. The fear of God does not narrow life, it makes it blossom.

Do not delay in turning back

The mercy that Ben Sira proclaims never becomes an excuse. He knows the temptation of the sinner who puts things off until tomorrow, telling himself that God is good and that he will have time to mend his ways. To this presumption he sets a pressing warning: “Do not delay in returning to the Lord, do not put it off from day to day.” Sirach 5:7 For the day of reckoning comes suddenly, and no one knows the hour. The great mercy of God calls not to defer conversion, but to throw oneself into it at once, with trust. So stands the balance of the whole book: a fear that does not crush, a mercy that does not slacken. Christ will take up this twofold call when he opens his ministry with these words: repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand.
