The Book of Zephaniah

Zephaniah announces the great day of the Lord, a day of judgment on an unfaithful people. But beyond the threat, he sketches the face of those God will save: not the powerful nor the proud, but a small remnant, humble and poor, who put their trust in the Lord. And the book ends on a unique cry of joy, where it is God himself who exults in the midst of his people.

The day of the Lord

The book opens on a vision of judgment. Zephaniah announces the day of the Lord, a day of anger and distress, when God will visit the idolatry and the pride of Judah. Those who worship the stars, those who mix the worship of the true God with that of idols, those who say in their hearts that God does neither good nor evil, all will be judged. This announcement of the great day, later taken up in the Christian liturgy as the day of wrath, is not made to make one despair, but to awaken: there is still time to turn back before the day comes. This day of the Lord, the prophets announce as the hour when God comes to render justice, to unveil the true face of things, and to separate good from evil; it is terrible for the proud, but it is salvation for whoever awaits it in humility. Zephaniah makes it the pivot of his whole book: nothing will escape this gaze, neither the arrogant nations nor the false devout of Jerusalem.

Seek the Lord, humble of the earth

In the midst of the threat, Zephaniah points to a way of salvation, open to those who lower themselves. He calls the humble of the earth, those who do the will of God, to seek justice and humility, so as perhaps to be sheltered on the day of anger. Salvation is not found in power nor in riches, which will avail nothing that day, but in the humility that entrusts itself to God. Thus the prophet prepares the most original revelation of his book: God will save not a triumphant nation, but a people of the poor. This same day of the Lord, so terrible in the opening lines, will become in the Christian liturgy the great hymn of the Dies irae, the day of wrath sung at funerals, which borrows from Zephaniah its images of fire and trumpet. But the prophet does not want to crush: he wants to convert. With him the threat is never the last note; it prepares the call to humility, the only refuge on the day of judgment.

A people humble and poor

Here is the heart of Zephaniah’s message. After the judgment, God will leave standing only a small remnant, purified of its pride: “I will leave within you a people humble and poor, who will take refuge in the name of the Lord.” Zephaniah 3:12 These are the poor of God, in Hebrew the anawim, those who have no other support than him. This small humble remnant will run through the Old Testament and become the ground where the Gospel will sprout: it is among these poor of the Lord that Mary, Joseph, Simeon, Anna will be born, all those who awaited the consolation of Israel. The Beatitudes will begin by proclaiming them blessed: blessed are the poor in heart. Zephaniah thus overturns the idea that God would stand on the side of the strong: it is the humble, those who have no support but him, who will inherit the promise. The small remnant is not a scrap of a people, it is the seed of a new people, purified by trial and wholly given to God.

The Lord in your midst

The book ends on an explosion of joy, one of the most beautiful of the Bible. The prophet invites Jerusalem to sing and to leap, for God comes to dwell in her midst: “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty saviour! He will rejoice over you with gladness.” Zephaniah 3:17 An unheard-of thing, it is no longer only the people who rejoice in their God, it is God who exults with joy over his people, like a bridegroom before the bride. This word will be read in the time of Advent and for the Virgin Mary, in whom God came to dwell most closely, and it announces the Emmanuel, God with us, who will take flesh in the midst of his people. Thus the little book of Zephaniah, so dark at the start, ends with the most joyful of reversals: the God who threatened to judge bends toward his humbled people and dances with joy before them. It is the summit of all prophecy: not a distant master, but a God in love, who finds his happiness in dwelling among the poor he has saved.
