Solomon and the Temple

David is succeeded by his son Solomon, to whom God gives wisdom and the charge of building the Temple his father had prepared. His reign is the summit of Israel’s kingship, a time of peace and glory; but it ends in compromise and idolatry, and prepares the division. The Chronicles concentrate all their attention on this reign, because it is the reign of the Temple.

The Wisdom of Solomon

David’s succession is not a settled thing: an elder son, Adonijah, tries to have himself proclaimed king, but Bathsheba and the prophet Nathan obtain from the aged David that he have Solomon anointed, the son of the promise. Once the throne is secured, God appears in a dream to the young king at Gibeon and offers him to ask whatever he wishes. Solomon asks neither for long life, nor riches, nor the death of his enemies, but for the understanding to govern a people so numerous. "Give your servant, then, an attentive heart to govern your people and to discern good from evil…" 1 Kings 3:9 God, pleased with this request, grants him wisdom and, in addition, the glory and riches he had not asked for. The famous judgment of the two women disputing a child, settled by threatening to divide it in order to reveal the true mother by her cry, shows this wisdom in act: it does not serve the king, it serves justice and the weak. His fame spreads, his proverbs and songs are counted by the thousands, and his wisdom passes for greater than that of all the East.

The Building of the Temple

The work of the reign is the Temple of Jerusalem, which Solomon raises in seven years with the help of Hiram, king of Tyre, who furnishes the cedars of Lebanon and the craftsmen. The stones are dressed far from the site, so that no sound of iron is heard on the holy place while it is being built. The sanctuary takes up the plan of the desert tent, but in stone and gold: the Holy of Holies, where the ark rests under the wings of two great cherubim of olivewood; the holy place; the great court, with the bronze sea for the ablutions of the priests and two pillars set up at the entrance. When the priests place the ark in the sanctuary and withdraw, the glory of the Lord fills the house like a cloud, so thick that they can no longer perform the service in it: God takes possession of the dwelling his people have built for him. What the tent had carried through the desert finds here its fixed point; the God who walked with Israel now dwells in its midst, at Jerusalem.

The Prayer of Dedication

Solomon dedicates the Temple with a long prayer, kneeling with hands open toward heaven, in which he himself names the paradox of what he has just built: the most beautiful house cannot contain God. "But will God really dwell on the earth? Behold, the heavens and the highest heavens cannot contain you: how much less this house that I have built!" 1 Kings 8:27 He asks God to listen to the prayers that will be turned toward this place, those of the sinner who returns as well as those of the foreigner come from afar, drawn by the Name of the Lord. The Temple does not enclose God; it is the place he chooses to make his Name dwell, toward which the people direct their prayer. Thus the sanctuary of stone is real and holy, but it already points beyond itself, toward a presence no building can hold, and which Christ will open in his own body and in his Church.

The Glory and the Fall

Solomon’s reign shines: his wisdom draws even the queen of Sheba, come from afar to test him with riddles and gone away in wonder; gold and peace flow in, trade expands, and Israel knows its highest hour. But this greatness carries its poison. To seal alliances, Solomon marries a great number of foreign women, and in his old age they turn his heart away. "his wives inclined his heart toward other gods, and his heart was no longer wholly with the Lord his God…" 1 Kings 11:4 He raises high places for their idols, even on the hills facing the holy city. Then God raises up adversaries against him, and announces that the kingdom will be torn from his son, though not wholly, out of regard for David: a single tribe will remain faithful to his house. The prophet Ahijah even tears his cloak into twelve pieces to signify the coming division. The wisest of kings falls through the divided heart, and the seed of the division is sown before his very death.
