Personified Wisdom

At the heart of Proverbs, Wisdom ceases to be a quality and speaks as a living person. She cries in the streets, tells that she was with God before the making of the world, builds her house, and sets her table. Facing her stands another woman, Lady Folly, who also calls passers-by to her feast. These pages, the deepest of the book, open of themselves onto the mystery of Christ.

Wisdom, Present at Creation

From the first chapters, Wisdom raises her voice like a herald: she cries in the streets, at the crossroads and the city gates, calling every man to listen to her, promising to whoever finds her life, true riches, and honor, and declaring that by her kings reign and govern with justice. Then, in a page without equal, she tells her origin: she was with God before the world was made. "The Lord brought me forth at the beginning of his work, before his most ancient deeds." Proverbs 8:22 Before the depths, before the mountains, she was already brought forth; and she was there when he set the heavens firm and traced the bounds of the sea, beside him like a master craftsman, his delight, playing before him. "I was beside him as a master craftsman, day after day his delight, playing constantly in his presence." Proverbs 8:30 Wisdom is not a thing God uses, but someone who stands at his side from the beginning, joined to all his work, rejoicing in the creation and finding her delight among the children of men. This mysterious figure, present at creation and turned toward men in love, is the summit of the book.

The Two Feasts

The image sharpens into two rival banquets, which close the first nine chapters like a decisive choice. Lady Wisdom has built her house, hewn its seven pillars, slaughtered her beasts, prepared her table, and sends out her maids to cry from the heights of the city, inviting the simple to enter. "Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars." Proverbs 9:1 Her invitation is open and generous, offered to whoever lacks understanding. "Come, eat my bread, drink the wine I have mixed." Proverbs 9:5 Across from her, a few steps away, Lady Folly sits at her door, loud and idle, calling the same passers-by who go straight on their way, but offering the seduction of what is hidden and forbidden. "Stolen water is sweeter, and bread eaten in secret is more delicious!" Proverbs 9:17 The two feasts look alike from the street, but they lead opposite ways: the table of Wisdom gives life and understanding; that of Folly, a stolen pleasure, hides that her guests are already in the depths of the abode of the dead. The whole choice of the two ways is set here as a choice between two meals, two loves, two mistresses of the house.

Wisdom, a Figure of Christ

The Church has always read these pages in the light of Christ. Wisdom present with God at the creation of the world, by whom all things were ordered, is a figure of the Word, the Son by whom all things were made, whom the Gospel of John and the letters of Paul proclaim, where Christ is called the firstborn of all creation, the one in whom and by whom all things hold together. Saint Paul confesses Christ as the very Wisdom of God, the power of God and the wisdom of God. This likeness was so strong that the Arians, who denied the divinity of the Son, seized on the words "the Lord brought me forth" to claim that the Word was a creature; the Church answered that the eternal Son is begotten and not made, and that this verse looks to Wisdom in her work and in her coming into our flesh, not in her eternity. And the table Wisdom prepares, the bread and the wine set out in her house for all who will come, the Fathers read as a figure of the Eucharist, that banquet where Christ, the Wisdom of God, gives himself as food, and of the Church, the house of Wisdom with her seven pillars, that gathers the simple to that table. So the deepest images of Proverbs find their fullness in the Word made flesh; it is here that personified Wisdom announces Christ, and the other wisdom books will only take up what she first says in Proverbs.
