Love Strong as Death

After singing desire, meeting, and the garden of love, the Song rises toward its summit. In a few verses of bare force, it no longer describes love, it says its essence: love is strong as death, a flame come from God, that nothing can quench or buy. There, the poem unveils its highest truth, and one understands why Scripture kept this song: the love it speaks of has the power of the last realities, and it bears in itself something of the very fire of God.

Set me as a seal

The bride asks to be engraved forever on the heart of the beloved: “Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm.” Song of Songs 8:6 The seal, in the ancient world, is what one carries on oneself and which marks all that belongs to us; it says the strongest and most exclusive attachment. To ask to be a seal upon the heart is to ask to hold the most intimate and most permanent place, never to be taken away. True love wants this total fidelity, this belonging that engraves the beloved in the beloved and is not taken back. It is not a passing feeling, but a bond that engages the whole being and forever.

Strong as death, a flame of God

Then comes the word that crowns the whole book: “love is strong as death, its passion relentless as the realm of the dead.” Song of Songs 8:6 Death is the force nothing escapes, which takes all and gives nothing back; to say that love is strong as it is to place it among the last powers, as invincible as it. But the poem goes further still, to the point of naming its source: “Its flames are flames of fire, a flame of the Lord.” Song of Songs 8:6 This is the only place in the book where God surfaces, discreetly, in the very name of love. Love is a fire, and this fire comes from God: this is why it has such strength. By singing human love, the Song touches without saying it its divine origin, for God himself is love, and all true love is a spark of his blaze.

Great waters cannot quench it

From this origin flows the invincibility of love: “Great waters cannot quench love, nor can the rivers sweep it away.” Song of Songs 8:7 The great waters, in the Bible, are the image of the forces of chaos and death; they can do nothing against true love, which passes through trials without going out. And because it comes from God, it escapes all measure of money: “Were a man to give for love all the wealth of his house, he would reap only contempt.” Song of Songs 8:7 Love is not bought, not bargained, not possessed like a good: it gives itself and is received freely, or it is not. To want to pay for it is to miss it, for its very nature is the gift.

Human love, a good work of God

That Scripture contains such a song is no accident: it is a word of God on love and on the body. The Song celebrates without shame the beauty of love between man and woman, and praises the body as a good work of the Creator, against every vision that would debase the flesh or hold desire to be an evil. From creation, God made man and woman for each other, and willed that the two should become one flesh; the Song sets this design to music, and sanctifies the love of spouses by bringing it into the holy word. But the love it sings is not a desire without law: the seal, the mutual belonging, the fidelity that engraves the beloved on the heart, all say a love ordered to commitment, exclusive and lasting. Thus the Song unites what sin separates, desire and fidelity, the body and the gift, and it makes human love a way that, without leaving the earth, opens toward Heaven.
