Joseph

Genesis ends on the story of Joseph, one of the sons of Jacob, long and continuous like a narrative in its own right. Sold by his brothers, humbled and then raised to the summit in Egypt, he becomes the savior of his family in the time of famine. His story tells a truth that runs through the whole Bible: God leads his design even through the evil that men commit, and he turns their crime into salvation. Through Joseph, the family of Jacob goes down into Egypt, where the history of the Exodus will soon begin.

The Favored Son, Sold by His Brothers

Joseph is the favorite son of Jacob, born of Rachel in his old age, to whom his father gives a festive tunic that stirs the jealousy of his brothers. Two dreams complete their turning against him: in them Joseph sees the sheaves of his brothers, then the sun, the moon, and the stars, bow down before him. Hatred settles on the crime, which they believe will also bury his dreams. “Come now, let us kill him and throw him into a cistern… Then we will see what becomes of his dreams!” Genesis 37:20 Held back by the eldest, they do not kill him, but throw him into a cistern, then sell him to merchants who take him to Egypt as a slave. To their father, they bring back the tunic dipped in the blood of a goat, letting him believe in a wild beast, and Jacob mourns his son as dead. The promise seems swallowed up in betrayal; in reality, God begins there the road that will save all his own.

From the Prison to the Palace

In Egypt, Joseph serves in the house of Potiphar, where God makes him prosper in all things. But his master’s wife wishes to seduce him, and Joseph refuses, not out of fear of men, but out of fidelity to God. “How could I commit such a great evil and sin against God?” Genesis 39:9 Falsely accused by this spurned woman, he is thrown into prison; there again, he loses neither his uprightness nor the favor of God, and he receives the gift of interpreting the dreams of two fellow prisoners. This gift finally draws him from the depths of the jail: Pharaoh, troubled by two dreams that no one can read, sends for him. Joseph deciphers in them the warning of God, seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine, and advises gathering reserves during the years of plenty. Struck by his wisdom, Pharaoh raises him at a stroke to the summit, making him governor of all Egypt, charged with preparing the land for the dearth. The slave sold by his brothers thus becomes the master who will soon hold their lives in his hands; humiliation will have been the road to elevation.

The Reunion and the Pardon

The famine reaches the land of Canaan as well, and Jacob sends his sons to buy grain in Egypt, without knowing that the one before whom they will bow, fulfilling his old dreams, is the brother they sold. Joseph recognizes them, tests them at length to sound their hearts, until he sees Judah offer himself as hostage in the place of the youngest, Benjamin; then, no longer able to hold himself back, he makes himself known to them in tears. Far from taking vengeance, he consoles them, discovering beneath their crime the hand of God who was leading everything to salvation. “it was to save your lives that God sent me ahead of you.” Genesis 45:5 And he draws from the whole trial the word that sums up his story and lights up all the evil of the world. “You meant to do me harm; but God turned it into good, to bring about what is happening today: the saving of the lives of a great many people.” Genesis 50:20 Joseph, the favored brother rejected and sold, humbled and then raised, who saves the very ones who handed him over and forgives them, sketches beforehand the face of Christ, handed over by his own and become their salvation.

Israel in Egypt, on the Threshold of the Exodus

Reconciled with his brothers, Joseph brings to Egypt his old father, from whom it had been hidden that he was still alive. The meeting of the father and the son he had believed dead is one of the summits of the book. “Now I can die, since I have seen your face and you are still alive!” Genesis 46:30 The whole house of Jacob, seventy persons, then settles in a rich country of Egypt, where it will grow until it becomes a people. Before dying, Joseph turns the eyes of his own toward the future, reminding them that Egypt is only a stage and that God will keep his promise. “I am about to die; but God will surely visit you and bring you up from this land to the one he swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Genesis 50:24 On this word of hope Genesis ends. The people is in Egypt, the promise is intact, and everything is ready for the great account of the deliverance, that of Moses and the exodus from Egypt.
