Isaac and Jacob

The promise made to Abraham does not die with him: it passes to his son Isaac, then to his grandson Jacob. These two generations show that the covenant is not handed on by the mere right of blood nor by the strength of man, but by the free choice of God, who often prefers the younger to the elder and makes even the most human of detours serve his designs. From Jacob will be born the twelve sons from whom the people of Israel will come.

Isaac and the Two Sons

Isaac, the son of the promise, receives for wife Rebecca, sought far off among the kindred of Abraham so as not to take her from among the Canaanites. She too is at first barren, and it is only at Isaac’s prayer that she conceives twins who already clash within her. God gives her their meaning: two peoples divide within her, and the expected order will be reversed. “Two nations are in your womb, two peoples will part from your very birth; one will be stronger than the other, and the elder will serve the younger.” Genesis 25:23 Esau is born first, red and hairy, a hunter loved by his father; Jacob comes next, holding his brother’s heel, a quiet man loved by his mother. One day when Esau comes home famished from the fields, he sells Jacob his birthright for a dish of lentils, despising for a moment’s hunger the inheritance of the promise. The younger thus receives, by the very consent of the elder, what God had destined for him. To Isaac himself, in the course of his life, God restates the promise made to his father. “Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and make your descendants numerous, for the sake of Abraham my servant.” Genesis 26:24

The Blessing and the Flight

Grown old and blind, Isaac wishes to bless Esau, his favorite, before dying. But Rebecca, remembering the oracle, urges Jacob to present himself in his brother’s place, covered with goatskins to deceive the old man’s hands. Jacob thus obtains by cunning the blessing of the firstborn, the one that carries the promise. The means is murky, and Scripture does not gloss over it; yet God makes use of it, drawing his design straight from a crooked path, without ever approving the deceit. Esau’s fury bursts out, and Jacob must flee far off, to his uncle Laban, in a distant land, to escape his brother’s vengeance. He leaves alone, driven out, carrying with him, without yet knowing it, the whole future of the people of God.

The Ladder of Bethel

On the first night of his flight, in solitude and fear, a stone for a pillow, Jacob has a dream that changes everything. “there was a ladder set up on the earth, its top reaching to heaven; and angels of God were going up and coming down on it.” Genesis 28:12 This ladder says that between heaven and earth, between God and this man in flight, a communication remains open. From the top of the ladder, God takes up for himself the promise of Abraham and Isaac, and he assures him of his presence to the end. “I am with you; I will keep you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land.” Genesis 28:15 Jacob wakes seized with fear: this place is the house of God and the gate of heaven. He calls it Bethel, “house of God,” and sets up in memory the stone that had served him as a pillow.

Israel, the Name of a People

At Laban’s, Jacob the trickster is tricked in his turn: deceived about his marriage, he receives first Leah, whom he had not asked for, then Rachel, whom he loved, and he serves twenty years for his wives and his flocks, becoming the father of a numerous family. Then he takes again the road to the promised land, with the fear of meeting Esau. On the eve of that meeting, left alone at the bank of the torrent of the Yabboq, he confronts in the night a mysterious adversary, with whom he wrestles until dawn without letting go, wresting from him a blessing at the price of a wound to the hip. From this struggle, Jacob comes out marked and renamed. “You will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have struggled with God and with men, and you have prevailed.” Genesis 32:29 The next day, what he dreaded turns into grace: Esau, whom he thought an avenger, runs toward him and embraces him. “Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him; and they wept.” Genesis 33:4 The new name of Jacob, Israel, will become that of a whole people, born of his twelve sons. These twelve sons, of whom Joseph and Benjamin are the last, will be the fathers of the twelve tribes, and it is in them that the promise of a great nation begins to take shape: from the family of one single man now comes the people God has chosen for himself.
