God’s Answer

After the speeches of the friends, the book marks a pause: a poem asks where Wisdom is to be found, and answers that she is hidden, known to God alone, and given to man under the form of the fear of the Lord. Then a fourth speaker, the young Elihu, takes up the debate. Finally, what the whole book awaited arrives: God answers. But he does not give the explanation demanded; from the whirlwind, he makes Job pass before the immensity of creation, and shows him a wisdom that surpasses him infinitely.

Where is Wisdom to be found?

In the midst of the speeches, a voice rises, calmer, for a meditation on Wisdom. Man knows how to dig the earth to draw from it gold, silver, precious stones; he pierces mountains and diverts rivers. But Wisdom, that understanding of the meaning of things, where is it to be found? It escapes all his diggings; it is neither in the sea nor in the abyss, and gold cannot buy it. God alone knows its way, for he had it beside him when he founded the world. And to man he gives a share of it, under an accessible form: “To fear the Lord, that is wisdom; to shun evil, that is understanding.” Job 28:28 It is the same word that runs through all the wisdom books: true wisdom is not seized, it is received, and it begins with the loving respect of God. Job will not have the explanation of his suffering, but he will be able to receive this.

Elihu and the waiting

A new figure then intervenes, Elihu, a young man who had stayed silent out of respect for age. He is indignant on both sides: against the friends, who condemned Job without convincing him, and against Job, who made himself more just than God. He brings an idea the other three did not have: suffering is not only a punishment, it can be a warning, a school. Through trial, God speaks to man, turns him from pride, purifies him as gold is refined. This is a real advance, for pain ceases to be a mere punishment and becomes a language of God. But Elihu too does not have the last word: he only prepares the coming of the One whom Job has never ceased to call. All the tension of the book now rises toward this one expectation: that God, at last, may speak.

God answers from the whirlwind

Then God answers, from the whirlwind. But his answer disconcerts: he does not tell Job why he suffers, he does not explain himself. He opens with a question that reverses the roles: “Who is this that darkens my design with words devoid of knowledge?” Job 38:2 Then it is God who questions Job, and not the reverse: “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?” Job 38:4 This is not a crushing of the creature, as if God answered by force one who asks for justice. It is something else: God invites Job to come out of his pain to contemplate the immensity of the work, and to measure that the world has an order and a wisdom that surpass him on every side. If Job does not understand even the mystery of a dawn or a spring, how would he hold in hand the government of good and evil?

Creation questioned

There follows one of the most beautiful cosmic poems of the Bible. God unfolds his creation wonder after wonder: the leaping sea to which he has fixed bounds, “This far you may come, no farther; here the pride of your waves shall halt.” Job 38:11; the dawn that seizes the earth by its edges, the stars he leads, the rain and the snow, then the long procession of the wild beasts, the lion, the free wild ass, the horse that laughs at danger, the eagle that nests on the rock. None obeys man, all live by the life God gives them. Finally come two colossal creatures, Behemoth, the strength of the earth, and Leviathan, the monster of the waters, image of chaos itself, which God alone masters and with which he plays. Before this surge, Job understands that he was not in the place from which one judges. He answers first with a word: “I lay my hand upon my mouth.” Job 40:4 The world is vaster and wiser than his pain, and this God who holds all is not a blind tyrant.
