Faith in the Trial

The first half of the book recounts how Daniel and his three companions, young exiles raised at the court of Babylon, held their faith at the price of their lives. Ordered to worship an idol or deny their God, they refuse, and God delivers them from the fire and the lions. But the heart of these stories is not the miracle: it is the fidelity that goes to the end, ready to die rather than betray, and that puts its faith not in deliverance, but in God alone.

Refusing the king’s table

It all begins with a small refusal, almost discreet. Daniel and his companions, chosen to serve the king, decide not to feed on the dishes of the royal table, so as not to defile themselves in contact with pagan customs. They were meant to be formed, renamed, poured into the mold of Babylon until they forgot where they came from; they accept the service, but keep the line that binds them to God. They ask for simple food, and God gives them health, beauty, and wisdom, more than all the others. This first gesture says the whole book: fidelity begins in small things, in the will to stay pure in the midst of a world that presses to yield. He who stands firm in little will stand firm in much, and God does not leave without fruit those who refuse compromise.

The blazing furnace

The trial becomes deadly when the king sets up a golden statue and orders all to worship it at the sound of the instruments. Daniel’s three companions refuse, standing alone in the midst of a prostrate crowd, and their answer is one of the summits of faith in all the Old Testament. They believe that God can save them, but their fidelity does not depend on this salvation: “even if he does not, know this well, O king: we will not serve your gods.” Daniel 3:18 Thrown into the white-hot furnace, so blazing that it kills those who cast them in, they walk in the midst of the flames without being burned, and the stunned king sees beside them a fourth figure: “I see four men, unbound, walking in the midst of the fire without any harm, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” Daniel 3:92 God is present at the very heart of the trial, with those who suffer for him.

The lions’ den

The same drama is replayed with Daniel grown old. Jealous men, unable to find anything against him except his fidelity to God, obtain from the king an edict forbidding any prayer addressed to anyone but the sovereign. Daniel, without hiding or boasting, continues to pray to his God three times a day, windows open toward Jerusalem. Denounced, given to the lions, he comes out unharmed in the morning: “My God sent his angel to shut the lions’ mouths: they have done me no harm, for I was found innocent before him.” Daniel 6:23 It is not cunning nor strength that saved him, but his uprightness and the hand of God. Faithful prayer, kept at the risk of death, proves stronger than the jaws of the beasts.

Even if he does not deliver us

These stories have nourished the courage of the martyrs of every age. Their lesson is not that God always saves from death, for many of the faithful died in the fire and under the teeth of the beasts, and the book itself, in its visions, announces that saints will be overcome by persecution. Their lesson is higher: faith is not bargained against a saved life. The three young men worship God even if he does not deliver them; there is pure faith, which loves God for himself and not for his benefits. This fidelity that passes through the fire announces Christ, the true Faithful One, gone down into death and raised up; and the presence of the fourth in the furnace, like the angel in the den, says that God never leaves alone the one who suffers for him. The Christian martyrs, thrown to the beasts in the arenas, reread these pages as their own story.
