Eleazar and the Seven Brothers

The second book of the Maccabees places at the heart of the crisis two accounts of martyrdom that have marked the whole Christian tradition: that of the old scribe Eleazar, and that of a mother and her seven sons. Under torture, these witnesses proclaim a faith the Old Testament had never stated so clearly: the resurrection of the dead. Their death is not a defeat, but the highest confession of Israel’s hope.

Old Eleazar

Eleazar, one of the foremost scribes, an old man of ninety with a venerable face, is dragged before the executioners and forced, his mouth pried open, to eat swine’s flesh. He spits it out and walks of his own accord to the torture. The officers charged with the execution, who had known him long, take pity on him and secretly propose an arrangement: let him have permitted meat brought, which he is allowed to eat, and only pretend to taste what the king commands, and his life will be spared. Eleazar flatly refuses this lie. At his age, he says, it is not fitting to pretend: by such a pretense, played to gain a little life, he would deceive the young, who would think that Eleazar, at ninety, had gone over to paganism, and his example would drag them to ruin. "At my age," he said, "it is not fitting to pretend. Many young men would think that Eleazar, at ninety years old, had gone over to the foreign ways." 2 Maccabees 6:24 He declares that he would rather die with honor, and that he suffers these torments with joy, in his body, out of reverence for God. The old man thus refuses even the pretense that would have saved him, for a feigned witness is already a betrayal, and he leaves the young, in dying, an example of nobility.

The Mother and Her Seven Sons

Then comes the most moving account of the book. A mother and her seven sons are arrested together, and the king himself, present, has them scourged to force them to eat the forbidden meat. They all refuse. They are then tortured to death one after another, with refined cruelty, before the eyes of their mother, who encourages them. The first dies without yielding; each brother, in turn, confesses that he dies for the laws of God and that God will raise him up. The second, at his last breath, proclaims the hope that holds them all. "the King of the universe will raise us up to eternal life, we who die for his laws." 2 Maccabees 7:9 The third holds out his tongue and his hands to the executioner, sure that God, from whom he has them, will give them back to him; another still warns the persecutor that for him, on the other hand, there will be no resurrection to life. "It is good to die at the hands of men when one looks to God for the hope of being raised up by him. For you, there will be no resurrection to life." 2 Maccabees 7:14 The resurrection they announce is not a vague survival of the soul, but life given back by God, body and soul; and it already separates those who rise to life from those who rise to judgment.

The Faith of the Mother

The mother is marvelous above all, and the book praises her beyond the seven. To see her seven sons die in a single day, she bears it with courage, because she hopes in the Lord; joining to a woman’s tenderness a man’s firmness, she exhorts each in the tongue of her fathers. To the youngest, whom the king presses with promises of riches and friendship to abandon the Law, she asks leave to speak, and addresses to him the deepest word of the book: let him look at heaven and earth, and know that God drew all things out of nothing, and that so he will give back to him the life and breath he gives out of mercy. "look at heaven and earth and all that is in them, and know that God made them out of nothing, and that the human race came into being in the same way." 2 Maccabees 7:28 The young man, far from bending, defies the king and dies last of the sons; then the mother dies in her turn. Her faith knots two truths together: the God who made being out of nothing can remake the body out of the dust; because he is the Creator, he is also the one who raises the dead. It is here that the Old Testament states most clearly the resurrection of the dead, prepared by God to be ready on the day when Christ would rise from the tomb; and the Church has honored these Maccabean martyrs as forerunners of the Christian martyrs, who will die in the same hope.
