A Time for Everything

At the heart of the book, Qoheleth contemplates the order of time. Everything in human life has its fixed moment: to be born and to die, to plant and to uproot, to weep and to laugh, to be silent and to speak. This order comes from God, but it surpasses man, for God has set in the human heart a sense of eternity without granting him to grasp his whole work. From this come the great enigmas Qoheleth confronts without resolving them: the injustice that reigns, the death that takes the wise like the fool, the chance that thwarts all reckoning. One consolation alone runs through these pages: it is better not to be alone.

A time for every matter

Then comes one of the most famous poems of the Bible: “There is a moment for everything, and a time for every matter under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 There follows a long litany of opposites: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time for war and a time for peace. The poem does not say that man masters these times; it says that each has its hour, fixed higher than himself. Human life is woven of opposites that come in turn, and wisdom consists in discerning the right hour, not in forcing it. There is a season for each thing, and to want to laugh when it is the hour of tears, or to build when it is the hour of letting go, is to strike against the very order of time.

Eternity set in the heart

Then Qoheleth touches the deepest point of the whole book: “he has also set eternity in their hearts, yet without allowing anyone to grasp, from beginning to end, the work that God does.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 This is why nothing "under the sun" could fill him: God has placed in man the desire for what does not pass, a sense of eternity, and man made for the eternal cannot be satisfied with time. But this same man cannot embrace the whole work of God: he carries an infinite desire and a bounded sight. This is at once the wound and the greatness of the human heart. Christian tradition will say it in a word, with Saint Augustine: the heart is without rest until it rests in God. This verse alone lifts the book above mere disillusion: the vanity of all that is finite is precisely the sign that man is made for the infinite.

The enigmas under the sun

Strengthened by this insight, Qoheleth confronts the enigmas he does not claim to resolve. Injustice first: where he sought right, he has often seen wickedness reign. Then death, which seems to level all; at man’s height, under the sun, he observes that the same fate reaches the wise and the fool, man and beast: “the same breath of life is in them all... all come from the dust, and all return to the dust.” Ecclesiastes 3:19-20 It is the darkest observation of the book, which its end will nonetheless correct, when the breath returns to God. Wealth, too, does not satisfy: “Whoever loves money is never satisfied with money.” Ecclesiastes 5:9 And knowledge has its limits: “no one can grasp what is done under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 8:17 Finally the unforeseen thwarts all reckoning, for “time and chance overtake them all.” Ecclesiastes 9:11 Qoheleth holds these enigmas open, without lying about the world to defend God; and this honesty is already a form of faith.

Better two than one

In the midst of these shadows shines a simple, warm clarity: man is not made for solitude. “Better two than one... if one falls, the other lifts him up.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 Against the vertigo of the man who faces the vanity of things alone, Qoheleth sets the near good of friendship: two draw a better fruit from their toil, warm each other, defend each other, lift each other up; and a cord of three strands is not quickly broken. This modest truth, set in the midst of so grave a meditation, says that life is not saved in accumulation but in the bond, and prepares from afar the announcement of a God who is himself communion and who wills not that man remain alone.
